Nicola Rimmer will be giving a Guest Lecture on Tuesday 10th November at Leeds Beckett University. This lecture is part of the Leeds Business School Guest Lecture Series, organised in association with the Centre for Governance, Leadership and Global Responsibility. The lecture will ask ‘can culture be audited?’.
The external operating environment is rapidly changing. The impact of technology and fast communication means that organisations are being scrutinised like never before. Society is demanding more transparency from organisations and there is much more emphasis on culture and tone at the top. We have all seen the consequences when organisations that touch every part of our lives are perceived not to meet these high standards – we have seen it in our food with the horsemeat scandal; in clothing when the building collapsed in Bangladesh; in where we buy our books and coffee, with discussions about where organisations pay tax. The ‘right’ organisational culture is increasingly being seen as vital.
There have been many commentaries and statements about organisational culture. In Financial Services, there is a requirement for internal audit to look at and specifically comment on, an organisation’s risk and control culture.
This is a new area for internal audit – and one which is causing huge debate amongst the profession. This lecture will provide an overview of internal audit and its increasingly important role in governance, and discuss how internal audit is auditing ‘culture’ – and how judgement and subjectivity is being incorporated into its work.
Nicola began her internal audit career in 1998 and has worked for various organizations, predominantly in financial services, including Aviva, HBOS, the Medical Defence Union, and Friends Life. She also worked for the Financial Services Authority and a professional services firm specializing in governance, risk and control. Nicola has spoken at national and international conferences about internal audit and leading practice in that field.
